Abstract: An important aspect of New Product Development (NPD) is the determination of the expected product dimensional window, describing the maximum strip width, that can be produced for a given strip thickness. The estimation of the product dimensional window is used to safely execute first rolling trials. In addition, one can verify in advance whether customer geometry specifications of the final strip can be reached. For this purpose, offline simulation tools are used for hot rolling as well as cold rolling. An accurate prediction of the deformation resistance and interstand softening behaviour of the new steel grade is key in the determination of the dimensional window. Preferably, the deformation resistance model is validated with experimental data, for example from tensile tests or laboratory mini-mills. Rolling simulations are performed, using prescribed process conditions with respect to for example load distributions, temperature and rolling speed requirements. The dimensional windows of respectively the hot strip mill and the cold strip mill are merged, resulting in a final product dimensional window, indicating the maximum strip width at a final, customer specified, strip thickness.

Abstract: Presently the prime task of manufacturing engineers is to make products within a short span by maintaining the best quality at minimum cost. Recent market trends confirm the continuation of New Product Development (NPD) as a change agent for many more years to come with a focus on high product variety and shorter product life cycles. The effective introduction of new products is critical to the performance of manufacturing industries in more industrial sectors. It is a measure of an industry's strength in innovation and competitiveness in NPD. Manufacturing industries are forced to accept that the focus on NPD is on increasing product variety and shorter product life cycle. For many manufacturing industries, mass customization with "voice of customer", agility and leanness are some of the vital prerequisites to survive in the current global competitive environment. NPD is no longer an isolated process; it requires close integration between all active members within the supply chain such as customers, suppliers, manufacturers, etc. and must be viewed as an integrated business process. The proper use of advanced IT has enhanced NPD in manufacturing enterprises. It facilitates shorter product lead-times and increases responsiveness to changes in the market along with improved product quality, as well as maintaining low product cost.

Abstract: Based on the review of related literature about the alignment of new product development (NPD) and supply chain (SC), the related decision variables of NPD and SC are summarized. In order to explore the alignment relationship between NDP and SC, we propose a study framework and the some relationship assumptions. Taking use of questionnaire investigation and Structural Equation Modeling, the relevant assumptions are verified and the mechanism and strategy of the alignment of NPD and SC are explored for Chinese manufacturing enterprises. The research result shows that the modularity and variety of NPD have close relationship with the complexity of supply chain configuration, collaboration and coordination. And the degree of the alignment has an important influence on the supply chain performance of the end product. The relevant conclusions would provide some theoretical reference and practical guidance on the decision of aligning the NPD with SC.

Abstract: Global warming is a major reason for dramatic climate changes around the world. Among various renewable energy sources, solar energy is one of the most promising for environmental protection and natural resource scarcity resolution. With the technical advantages obtained from the semiconductor and TFT-LCD industries, the Photovoltaic (PV) industry in Taiwan can achieve a solid global position. Current PV products, however, still face a large obstacle due to high production cost and low PV conversion efficiency. An important source of competitive advantage, survival and renewal for firms in todays competitive market is successful new product development (NPD). PV firms need to carry out effective R&D in order to improve product quality and to obtain cost effectiveness. This research, thus, constructs a comprehensive model, which comprises fuzzy Delphi method (FDM) and quality function deployment (QFD), for implementing a NPD project for a PV manufacturer. The proposed model shall help designers to systematically consider relevant NPD information and reconcile tradeoffs among various performance characteristics in a fuzzy environment.

Abstract: New Product Development (NPD) performance has increasingly been viewed as an essential indicator for organizational competitiveness and success. However, in the current literature of NPD, NPD performance measures are tends to focus on assessment of performance at the ending phase of NPD process (i.e. after product launch). Assessment of NPD performance before product launch is not widely discussed. Hence, this paper aims to address the research gap by developing models to predict NPD performance at the front end stage of NPD process. In line with this, 5 important NPD process constructs and 7 NPD management constructs were identified from literature review. These constructs were subsequently formulated into a survey questionnaire and responded by 186 Research and Development (R&D) staffs from R&D companies in Malaysia. Thereafter, the NPD process and management constructs were regressed with the perceived NPD performance to develop models for NPD performance prediction prior to product launch. Finally, discussion on researchs finding and recommendations are included at the end of this paper.
